It may seem like everyone is making mini and micro EDC ratchet wrenches these days, they’ve become a very popular EDC tool, but how do you make sure you’re getting the best EDC ratchet wrench to put in your EDC toolkit? Let’s look at the different types of EDC micro ratchet wrenches available today and discover how attention to detail and quality makes all the difference between a good EDC ratchet wrench and the one you would regret buying!

Why are EDC ratchet wrenches & bit drivers popular?

EDC ratchet wrenches and EDC ratchet bit drivers are the next level up in complexity and sophistication from non-ratchet Y-drivers, standard EDC bit drivers, and even our very popular Lollipop EDC Bit Driver – although we think that’s pretty special, and it also has a lot of intelligent engineering in its design.
The ratcheting action of EDC micro ratchet wrenches and ratchet bit drivers can make a significant difference to utility if the tool is well designed, increasing efficiency and speed of operation. Add a flex-head to your EDC 1/4” ratchet wrench and you open up broader horizons for getting into awkward and tight spaces to tighten or disassemble even the most stubborn fasteners.

What are 4 common uses for EDC ratchet wrenches?

  1. Bike adjustment & maintenance
  2. Home repairs for appliances, furniture & fittings
  3. Outdoor camping, drone maintenance & equipment care
  4. Automotive & vehicle maintenance

Ratchets give you two simple advantages over non-ratchet EDC tools. They enable you to work in confined spaces, and they enable you to keep driving the socket or bit without having to reposition your tool every time. Let’s focus on EDC ratchet wrench design to consider what this means in practice for getting the best performance out of your EDC toolkit.

What are the 4 categories of EDC ratchet wrench?

People in the EDC community use ‘mini’ and ‘micro’ to describe all sorts of ratchet wrench designs, so just to be clear, we’re talking here about anything that comes under the following four categories:

  1. Mini EDC ratchet wrench – your regular, portable ratchet wrench
  2. Micro EDC ratchet wrench – an even smaller ratchet wrench…
  3. Flex-head EDC ratchet wrench – a mini ratchet wrench with a flexible head for very tight spaces
  4. Leatherman & multitool compatible EDC ratchet wrenches

The mini EDC 1/4” ratchet wrench

The mini ratchet wrench takes a 1/4” bit or socket adapter, and is the most common size for EDC ratchet wrenches. You can see that both our 1/4” mini ratchet wrench (above) and micro ratchet wrench include a magnetic socket in the handle so they can double as a conventional bit holder / screwdriver for simple and speedy jobs.

What’s a micro EDC ratchet wrench?

At 711L, the distinction we make between ‘mini’ and ‘micro’ is that a 1/4” ratchet wrench designed for EDC is ‘mini’ and a micro ratchet wrench is one which takes a 4mm standard metric bit – that’s our micro ratchet wrench shown in the picture above. Micro ratchet wrenches are very light (ours weighs 18.4g) and are designed primarily for work on electronics, phones, and cameras.

Flex head EDC ratchet wrenches

Flex heads add functionality by allowing you to angle the head to get into places fixed head EDC ratchet wrenches cannot reach. Our latest model is the 1/4” flex head EDC ratchet wrench shown here, which opens up a wide range of possibilities in a remarkably small and robust package.

Flat head leatherman compatible EDC ratchet wrenches

A leatherman compatible EDC ratchet wrench will complement your Leatherman or other flat bit compatible multi-tool, but be aware that the torque capabilities of a high quality ratchet wrench (like ours) may exceed the physical design strength of your multi-tool bit holder – don’t get carried away!

What is an EDC tool?

EDC stands for ‘Everyday Carry’ – the tools you want to have with you at all times. If you have a mobile workshop then this could be quite an extensive list of tools, but if, like most of us, you don’t have such significant tool demands, and don’t want to have to use a vehicle to carry them around, you need to have a set of reliable tools you can carry with you. This naturally leads to a need for EDC tools to be lightweight without compromising on functionality.

711L EDC tools for bikes

Many EDC tool designs came from the demands of bike riders for lightweight tools that could solve all the normal adjustment and repair requirements of cycling without having to give up on your ride and go home to fix it. Cyclists provide an excellent test market for high quality EDC tools as bike tools need to be both lightweight and versatile, since bikes often have a wide variety of fasteners and adjustment tool requirements.

Get more EDC tool torque with the 711L Lollipop bit driver

The patented 711L Lollipop bit driver is a revolutionary innovation in EDC tool design. Adding the right-angle lollipop drive creates 10 Nm of torque without increasing the grip size. This gets over the problem of small EDC tools lacking enough angular momentum because they are too skinny and lightweight.
