It started with a 2-in-1 adapter design for multitools
The original idea for the 711L 2-in-1 inline bit socket adapter was to fix a problem people had with Leatherman multitool adapters. You could only use flat bits with your multitool, which are generally more expensive than hex bits and have fewer options for bit type than standard EDC hex bits. The solution was to make a flat shank to ¼” hex bit adapter for Leatherman. We didn’t stop there, though, it occurred to us that the Leatherman multitool also needed a ¼” socket adapter that would fit the flat bit holder design.
Why have two flat shank adapters when you only need one?
Stage two of our design process was to come up with a flat shank adapter for multitool bit holders that would give you both a ¼” hex bit adapter and a ¼” socket adapter in the same package. The lightbulb moment was when we realized that a sliding collar could be used to smoothly switch between an exposed ¼” socket driver head and a recessed ¼” hex bit holder. With some ingenious engineering design features to make it as functional as two single purpose adapters we were able to patent our innovative design.
Completing the EDC gear options for hex shank socket adapters
From the flat shank multitool 2-in-1 inline bit socket adapter, it seemed a logical step to design and manufacture a version with a standard ¼” hex shank to complete the lineup. The hex shank version enables you to switch between bit driver and socket driver by simply sliding the collar, just like the flat shank version, and also both versions give you a potentially quite useful short extension for your bit driver or ratchet wrench.
What about bit socket adapter compatibility with other EDC gear?
The 711L EDC 2-in-1 inline bit socket adapter is highly compatible with all sorts of other EDC gear. We even design our flat shank versions to work in standard hex bit holders and hex ratchet drivers, which is not possible with some brands of flat shank bit or bit holder.
