The 711L EDC Y Torque Driver is the Perfect Bike Tool

The 711L EDC Y Torque Driver is the Perfect Bike Tool-FU

The new 711L EDC Y Torque Driver gives you precision torque limiting with three hex sockets to customize with your own choice of bits. Each socket has a different torque limit, from 0-3Nm to 5Nm, so you get complete flexibility to match the tools and torque you want for your custom setup.

Why is the EDC Y Torque Driver ideal for bike maintenance?

What happens if you don’t use a torque driver for bike fasteners is the reason we developed the new 711L EDC Y Torque Driver to be ideal for bike maintenance! When bikes were made of steel with steel components, bolts and fittings, it was hard to apply too much torque to fasteners, adjusters and components with standard tools. Modern bikes that use aluminum alloys, plastics and composites for standard frame elements and components require more careful handling.

Modern alloy and carbon bikes are torque sensitive

Modern alloy and carbon bike frames, plastic and composite parts, including alloy and carbon seat rails, carbon handlebars and lightweight derailleur and disc braking systems have radically changed bike performance. These changes have made bikes more sensitive to using the correct torque when carrying out maintenance and adjustments of lightweight precision engineered components.

Protect your bike components by using the correct torque

Protect carbon seat rails without them working loose by using the correct tightening torque. It is now very easy to damage bike components by using too much torque, especially when it involves mixed materials. 304 stainless steel allen bolts can easily exert enough torque on an aluminum alloy gear mounting bracket to crush carbon seat rails. This can be an expensive and non-repairable problem when you are fitting a high performance seat with carbon rails in an aluminum or steel seat post clamp.

The 711L Y torque driver helps prevent damage to threaded components

Knowing exactly what torque you’re applying helps to protect aluminum threads from stripping when driving stainless steel allen bolts into bike accessory mounts. We’ve probably all over torqued a fastener and felt the resistance disappear with the threads, usually requiring recutting the threads or replacing the component. The 0.5-3.0 Nm (4.4-26.5 lb-in) inline torque driver is there to protect delicate threads.

What are the three torque options for the 711L EDC Y Torque Driver?

  1. 0-3 Nm for small fasteners up to M4 and delicate mixed material fastening
  2. 4.0 Nm (35.4 in-lb) for high grade M4 fasteners
  3. 5.0 Nm (44.3 in-lb) for M5 fasteners

The 711L Y Torque Driver lets you tighten components correctly

Having options for both 4.0 Nm (35.4 in-lb) and 5.0 Nm (44.3 in-lb) torque enables you to accurately tighten components on your bike with confidence, and without damage. People are cautious about how much torque to use on alloy and carbon bike components. This sometimes leads to insufficient torque, loose fittings and mountings, which can be hazardous and even cause breakages and failures if components move out of alignment.

You’ll need a full size torque wrench for cranks and other large components that can require up to 67.5 Nm (600 lb-in) of torque loading, but for on-the-road maintenance and adjustments the new 711L Y Torque Driver is the perfect, portable tool to take with you for everyday use. Check out this useful chart of common bike component torque settings for more information.

Sometimes the correct torque is an important safety issue

Using the correct torque on headsets, seat rails, and frame suspension components is an important safety issue. This is because a fastener that has been tightened below the specified torque can be touch-tight but easily work loose, with potentially catastrophic consequences.

The headset in the picture above had been tightened well below the recommended safe torque, which was not obvious by touch, but was very clear when checking it with the 711L EDC Y torque driver. 5.0 Nm is a standard torque setting for most bike stems and seat posts, and it took an additional turn past the point where the headset felt tight to reach the 5.0 Nm limit.
