The Complete 711L EDC Gear Bike Toolkit!

The Complete 711L EDC Gear Bike Toolkit - 711L EDC-FU

When you want to combine utility with reduced weight and portability, it should come as no surprise that you can do this with a 711 EDC gear bike toolkit! The customizable flexibility of the 711L Y-driver or the torque of our classic 711L Lollipop bit-driver make solid foundations to build a comprehensive, reliable bike toolkit that will never let you down.

711L EDC gear gives you the options to min-max your EDC bike toolkit

Min-maxing your EDC bike toolkit makes sense for several reasons. You want to carry the minimum EDC gear you need, with the maximum functionality you want. Fortunately 711L EDC gear gives you options to achieve both in a surprisingly small package, as you can see in the picture above.

  • 711L Y-Driver
  • Allen & screw driver bits
  • Presta or Schrader air chuck

The backbone of the 711L EDC gear bike toolkit is our three-way locking 711L Y-driver. You can set up this 3-way ¼” hex bit driver in advance with the three most used allen bits, sockets or screw driver bits that you need to adjust and repair your bike. Add any additional bits required to your pouch and you can swap them into your Y-driver on the fly because of its quick-lock functionality.

If you’re worried about punctures…

For local short distance rides a minimalist could stop there with a loaded Y-driver and any additional bits you might need in your EDC gear pouch. If you are worried about punctures, then including a spare inner tube and tire levers adds peace of mind. If you have tubeless tires you could add a bacon-type plug kit (one is coming soon from 711L…).

Why would I take a 711L air chuck?

We manufacture high quality miniature presta air chucks and schrader air chucks that make adjusting tire pressures much easier and more reliable than trying to get a good fit with your standard bike pump connector (or portable battery compressor – if you’re an EDC maximalist!).

How useful is the 711 EDC Lollipop bit driver in an EDC bike toolkit?

The answer is that the 711 EDC Lollipop bit driver is an excellent choice of compact, high torque tool for any EDC bike toolkit. You might decide to keep a 711L Lollipop bit driver in your pouch with the necessary bits and leave the Y-driver at home, or take both if you have any awkward spots that it’s easier to reach with a Lollipop.

Should I put a Leatherman in my EDC bike toolkit?

You don’t want to keep adding tools to your EDC bike toolkit until it looks like the picture above, but Leatherman multi-tools and their competitors have become an integral part of almost all EDC gear toolkits. Have a think about the extra functionality you get for the weight.

Remember to be careful with torque if you’re thinking about putting a leatherman with flat bits into your kit and leaving out a Y-driver or Lollipop. The flat bit holder in the Leatherman does not have a high torque rating and is easily damaged if you’re trying to torque up an allen bolt on your bike! You can replace all the spanners and keys in the picture above with a Y-Driver and bits and reduce the stress on your Leatherman!

Meeting use-case scenarios with your EDC bike toolkit!

If we think about the most common use-case scenarios where you may need your EDC bike toolkit, most of these are adjustment and tightening, needing you to be able to loosen, adjust, and tighten a variety of fasteners. Most bikes have a limited number of allen bolt sizes – typically 3-6mm, and a few pozidrive or slot flat head tuning and adjustment screws.

What can you do with an EDC bike toolkit?

  • Seat post adjustment
  • Seat rail adjustment
  • Derailleur / gear adjustment
  • Brake & cable adjustment
  • Wheel removal and refitting
  • Puncture repair
  • Fitting and removing accessories
  • Tightening loose allen bolts & screws

If you’re looking at removing wheels, say to detangle a badly dropped chain, then unless you have quick release wheel nuts, you’re going to need a suitably sized socket. You shouldn’t need a specialist 3-way socket, and definitely not an entire socket set, but can take a socket of the correct size to fit in your 711L Y-driver to meet this challenge. Our EDC ratchet wrenches are so small that you can add one to drive sockets with ease and hardly notice the added weight.

If you have tubed tires and you decide to take a spare tube, you’ll need tire levers. We don’t make these – there are plenty of good, inexpensive examples on the market to choose from which all do pretty much the same thing! For tubeless tires a tire plug kit is a sensible addition, and we are designing one of those at the moment to be compatible with our Y-Driver for even more 711L EDC bike tool functionality!!
